Meet Laura, our Renal Social Worker

Laura Cowell is the Renal Social Worker for the Renal department at Lancashire Teaching Hospital and works with patients who live in Lancashire and south Cumbria.

She works with people who have chronic kidney disease and are on dialysis as well as their family/carers.  She also supports patients who are pre dialysis, post-transplant, and those who choose for conservative care.

She can help patients with:

  • Optimising benefit entitlement/ discussion of disability benefits.
  • Kidney patient financial grants.
  • Blue car parking badges /bus pass
  • Emotional support/counselling/ psychological support.
  • Young Kidney Patient Support
  • Employment support
  • Advocacy with renal team/agencies/ professionals.
  • Local Authority Care Act assessments and help (carers) at home.
  • Funding options for care.
  • Support available for informal carers.
  • Young carers.
  • Housing difficulties/liaising with housing associations.
  • Housing options/ 24hour care/ sheltered accommodation.
  • Falls monitors/ telecare/ lifelines.
  • Aids at home/ stair lifts
  • Kidney patient funeral grants
