Complementary Therapy blog March 2018

Hi Everyone!

Our Project has grown from strength to strength. We have a lovely team of therapists who give up their free time to come and deliver therapies for the patients on dialysis.

I carried out another 5 interviews over the last quarter of the year. Therapists were interviewed at Salford, Bolton and Oldham.

We had 2 new starters. One at Bolton and the other a returning Complementary Therapist from Wigan who has returned after completing more studying.

The project now has 11 Therapists in the Salford Dialysis unit, 4 in Wigan, 5 in Bolton and 2 in Oldham. These Therapists are all fully trained and specialists in their field. They can deliver various treatments, including Massage, Aromatherapy Massages, Reflexology, and some do Reiki. Our Governing body that ensures we practice at high standards is the Federation of Holistic Therapists. You can find them on the web if you are looking for any information or looking to find a therapist in your area.

I have decided to do a little on each kind of therapy to explain a bit more about what we do and what we offer as a service, so look out for those Blogs.

World Kidney Day

World Kidney Day was a huge success. We had an exhibition table in the Foyer at the main hospital, the site where we gave out information on the work that we do. We also did mini treatments, which lots of people enjoyed and took advantage of.

Xaverian Sixth Form College

Another Exciting event was being invited to speak to the students at Xaverian Sixth Form College in Manchester. They were studying Health and Social Care and had a module on Complementary Therapies to complete. They knew little about Complementary Therapies, so it gave them an insight into working in a clinical setting and with patients with long-term medical conditions.

The students enjoyed the talk and the Tutors were so appreciative. We have been invited back to talk to more sixth form students later in the year. “Good luck, Guys, on completing your studies”.

Complementary Therapy Survey

Last but not least – we are conducting a Survey on Complementary Therapies on the Dialysis Units. We want to understand what’s worked so far, what we could do better and what you would like in the future. This sort of survey can also really help us with planning for raising more money to support our complimentary therapy programme – so if you get one, could you please fill it out the best you can and return it asap.

Well that’s a little snippet into my activities earlier this year. If you have any questions, you can contact me directly at janet.cairnie@srft.nhs.uk.

Until next time! See you soon.
