Manchester University Foundation Trust is a large NHS trust that was formed following a merger of ten hospitals: Manchester Royal Infirmary, North Manchester General Hospital, Wythenshawe Hospital, Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, Royal Manchester Eye Hospital, Saint Mary’s Hospital, University Dental Hospital of Manchester, Withington Hospital, Trafford General hospital, and Altrincham Hospital.

 

Renal Services


Manchester Royal Infirmary hospital is the main hub or centre providing Renal Care to people living in the East Sector of Greater Manchester, and it is run by the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT).

The geographical area covered by the Trust includes North, South and Central Manchester, Tameside and Glossop, Stockport, South Trafford and South Cheshire. Renal services provided include outpatient, inpatient, pre-dialysis, peritoneal dialysis, haemodialysis, lipid aphaeresis and ABO transplantation.

At Manchester Royal Infirmary, inpatient renal care is provided on wards 36 and 37. There are also outpatient clinics, the haemodialysis unit and the peritoneal dialysis training unit. Across the East sector haemodialysis is provided at the main hub (Manchester Royal Infirmary) and in satellite dialysis units situated at Altrincham, Tameside, Octagon Unit, Macclesfield and Stockport. Home haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis is supported by the renal community nurses. The home haemodialysis training unit is based at Wythenshawe Hospital.

The renal consultants undertake specialist renal clinics at MRI, North Manchester General, Wythenshawe, Macclesfield, Stepping Hill, Tameside, Altrincham and Trafford Hospitals. The department is involved in a wide variety of research projects.

Renal Transplant Unit (RTU)

The Manchester Renal Transplant Unit is located at Manchester Royal Infirmary, it serves the Northwest and provides kidney and pancreas transplant services. It has an excellent reputation and is one of the busiest units in the UK. It has a growing live kidney donor programme and offers keyhole surgery to donors.

Inpatient care is provided on wards 9 and 10, with daily visiting hours between 2pm and 5pm and then again between 6pm and 8pm.

Dietetics at Manchester University Foundation Trust

Renal dietitians work provide diet and fluid related advice to people at many stages of kidney disease and treatment, including those who are not yet requiring dialysis, those with nephrotic syndrome, individuals needing haemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis, those presenting with acute kidney injuries and some people with kidney transplants.
