About Greater Manchester KIN (GMKIN)

GMKIN is the collaboration between patients with Kidney Disease, their carers, and those providing the necessary supporting health care across Greater Manchester.

In Greater Manchester the provision of Kidney Care is shared between two large hospital trusts, Northern Care Alliance (NCA) and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT).

Northern Care Alliance (NCA) provides renal care to people living in the West sector of the city (such as Salford, Oldham, Rochdale, Bury), and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) provides care to those in the East sector (such as North Manchester, central Manchester, Wythenshawe, Withington, Trafford, Altrincham). We suggest you check which trust covers your renal care, as this will help you better navigate our resources.

Our Stories

What members tell us about GMKIN

“My work within GMKIN led directly to me gaining paid employment for the first time in over 10 years. ‘Within GMKIN I also observed other patients becoming energised and more engaged with the renal community. That sense of community helped those patients, many of whom were lonely and isolated, to discover a purpose in life just as I had done.”

“Living with kidney disease is hard. I have great family support but sometimes that isn’t enough.Through GMKIN I’ve been able to meet people who really understand. In a way it has become a second family to me, if I’m struggling I know there are people I can reach out to who have been where I am. Your medical team might give you the best medical advice but when it comes to living with kidney disease, you can’t beat speaking to other kidney patients.”

“GMKIN has been a fantastic advance in enabling communication with renal patients across Greater Manchester. It has provided an invaluable community in which patients can express their views, learn what others are thinking, and to gain advice on how to deal with issues. It provides an excellent platform to inform renal patients about ongoing local research opportunities, and this can only benefit the research teams and patients themselves.”
